How much does a kitchen remodel cost?

A kitchen remodel costs $150 to $250 per square foot, or $15,000 to $50,000 for a full renovation, per HomeGuide.

HomeGuide splits kitchens into three scopes and the difference between them is structural, not cosmetic. A basic or small remodel at $60 to $150 per square foot, or $4,000 to $18,000, refaces cabinets and updates counters, flooring and some fixtures with the layout unchanged. An average or full remodel at $150 to $250, or $15,000 to $50,000, replaces the appliances, floors, counters, lighting and cabinets — still with the layout unchanged. A high-end or large remodel at $250 to $350, or $50,000 to $70,000 and up, changes the structural layout and moves plumbing, electrical or gas lines. Gutting a kitchen adds $500 to $2,500 for demolition.

A 20x20 kitchen remodel is $24,000 to $140,000 across HomeGuide's three scopes, and a 10x10 is $6,000 to $35,000. Its own definition of a small kitchen is 120 square feet or less, and it notes that a small remodel can also mean a partial renovation of a larger space rather than a whole job in a little one. On its terms, renovation means restoring — resurfacing or replacing cabinets — and remodelling means changing the structure, such as taking out a wall for an open plan.

Cabinets are the quarter of the budget, and HomeGuide's cabinet figures are the ones worth knowing before a quote arrives: $4,500 to $15,000 to replace them completely, from $3,000 for basic cabinets in a small kitchen up to $36,000 or more for high-end custom in a 200-square-foot-plus kitchen. Its cheaper routes are replacing the doors alone at $180 to $330 per door, refacing at $5,000 to $13,000 for a 100 to 200 square foot kitchen, refinishing at $1,500 to $4,500, painting at $900 to $3,800, and replacing the handles only at $6 to $60 per handle.

A quarter of the money is cabinets and the layout is free. The two cheapest big moves in HomeGuide's own tables are refacing the cabinets you have and leaving the plumbing where it is.

Countertops, backsplash and appliances

HomeGuide puts replacing kitchen countertops at $1,500 to $6,000 for an average kitchen, or $50 to $150 per square foot installed, and names engineered quartz and granite as the popular choices. Backsplash installation is $500 to $1,700, or $10 to $50 per square foot installed, with labor up to half of that. New appliances are $200 to $3,700 or more each installed, and a matching set of dishwasher, microwave, range and refrigerator is $2,500 to $6,800 installed. A kitchen floor remodel is $300 to $3,000.
